This event is an excellent opportunity for the public to participate in the process. Everyone is welcome to attend.
A charrette is a group exercise where residents tell us and show us what they would like to see in the City - to help define its desired character and priorities.
Residents will be drawing on maps with colored markers to show where they would like to see new parks, businesses, stores, homes, street improvements, and more.
The results will be brought together to create a "Vision" for the City, which will serve as a foundation for the creation of goals, objectives, plans, and recommendations. |

| Consultant Team meets with Benton Harbor Youth at Lake Michigan CollegeOn Friday, July 10th, 2009, the Consultant Team met with the youth of the community to gather their comments and vision for the future of Benton Harbor. A large youth group was already meeting at the Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College which provided an excellent opportunity for the Consultant to reach as many youth as possible early in the planning process. |
| Planning Project Begins! The planning process for the City’s Master Plan began on June 24th, 2009 with a daylong project “kick-off” and orientation. Throughout the day, members of the Consultant Team conducted meetings and site visits of neighborhoods in the City. The Team met with key City Staff, the Planning Commission, Mayor Wilce Cooke, and the Master Plan Advisory Committee (MPAC). In addition to these meetings, the Consultant Team toured the community with City Staff. |
| The First Public Meeting will be held July 23rd, 2009!Give us your opinion and insight . . .
This community workshop is the first of many face-to-face community outreach events scheduled throughout the planning process. The purpose of this first workshop is to allow residents to tell us what they think, before even preliminary plans and recommendations are prepared.
The workshop will: (a) review the purpose of the Master Plan, the planning process to be undertaken, and the schedule for the study; and (b) secure local views on problems, issues and potentials within the community.
In an effort to reach as many residents as possible, the Community Workshop will be offered at two different times on the same day, one in the morning and one in the evening. Each workshop will be held identically with the intent being people who find morning more convenient will attend that workshop, and those that are only available in the evening will attend the evening workshop.
We are currently working with City Staff to determine exact times and locations for these meetings. |
