Since we're paying now to fix a problem-stormwater-in large part caused by development, I'd like to see our building and zoning codes and regulations updated with an eye towards Best Management Practices (BMP) for both, so that we don't simply build back another set of problems we will be paying for again in the future, as we are so dearly paying to fix now.
The use of mitigation techniques and permeable surfaces should be emphasized. Brick surfaces allow for drainage between pavers. Permeable concrete has been proven as a viable surfacing material. Side yard setbacks must allow for water conveying swales to be properly installed. Retaining our most precious resource-our trees-whether they be on public or private property, need at least modest protections because they all help ease flooding, they all mitigate greenhouse gases, and they all shade, comfort and add value to our homes and neighborhoods. Rain gardens and bioswales provide natural features that absorb and clean water rather than simply store it as is for later dumping into our waterways, as we currently do with piping.
Simple education by the village, and savvy intelligent builders will agree that being a good community partner is itself a Best Management Practice. |
