Making the "Big Idea" into a Viable Project

Many communities brainstorm "big ideas" and then immediately pursue plans, development regulations, incentive tools, etc. to achieve them.  But an all-in approach to development can lead to misplaced resources in projects that lack feasibility.  Planning efforts and due diligence on the front end of "big idea" projects focus resources on recommendations that are more realistic at the outset, avoiding projects that flounder and lose community support.  The workshop will feature a public official, regional planning agency representative, private developer, and planning consultants discussing their past experiences, how things can go wrong in the planning process, and what can be done to avoid missteps and create community inspired, market viable projects.

Dan Gardner, MPA, Principal Associate at Houseal Lavigne Associates, has extensive expertise and experience in planning, development, economic impacts, fiscal impacts, and market analysis in numerous markets throughout the United States and the Midwest in particular.

Richard T. Ely
1854-1943

Lambda Alpha International, the Honorary Society for the Advancement of Land Economics, was founded in 1930 under the leadership of the renowned land economist and champion of academic freedom, Richard T. Ely. As an honorary society, it provides a forum for the study and advancement of land economics where the "winnowing and sifting" of ideas takes place in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

Individuals who have made notable contributions to the study and ethical practice of land use are invited to join Lambda Alpha International. Now numbering more than 2,000 members worldwide, Lambda Alpha International is an apolitical not-for-profit professional organization.

Organizational Goals
The Society's original goal of "fostering a closer association with academia and professionals involved with land economics and related fields", while still valid today, has expanded. The Society is now a catalyst for the advancement of land economics by facilitating the interaction of members who have distinguished themselves in their professions, their communities and through academic achievements. Lambda Alpha International provides an opportunity for distinguished practitioners and scholars to come together in fellowship to discuss, debate and perhaps solve dilemmas involving use of our land resources.

John Houseal Speaks About Ethics
John Houseal presented, "Ethics in an Economic Downturn" to a national audience as part of a cooperative webinar effort by participating APA Chapters, Divisions and Universities.  The goal of the cooperative webinar effort is to provide free AICP Certification Maintenance credits to participating members. In an attempt to broaden the discussion of the AICP Code of Ethics, John drew from real-life examples of ethical gray areas which planners may face due to the current economic situation.
