What is a Master Plan?

A Master Plan is a blueprint for the future. It is a community vision that will guide the Township for the next 20 years. The Master Plan will result in a set of policies that direct future growth and development. Additionally, the creation of a Plan can lead to potential strategies that will help effectively guide Township leaders as they make substantive and thoughtful decisions for the community.

What are the Contents of a Master Plan?

The Master Plan will outline Waterford Township’s existing conditions, describe future goals and objectives for development, and include an action plan on how to achieve these goals and objectives. The Waterford Township Master Plan will address the following topics:

  • Housing and Neighborhoods
  • Economic Development
  • Transportation and Mobility
  • Infrastructure and Utilities
  • Parks, Recreation, and Environment

Town Center Subarea Plan

Based on input received from the community and Township officials, and and existing conditions analysis, the Master Plan will identify an area of focus for future placemaking and compact development strategies. The resulting Town Center Subarea Plan will provide more detailed recommendations on urban design, land use and development character, needed public improvements.

Who is involved in creating the Master Plan?

The Township is committed to involving residents, businesses, and workers in the process to craft a community vision for Waterford Township’s future. Ultimately, the Planning Commission and Board of Trustees will approve and adopt the Master Plan.

We already have other plans. What will happen to those?

Existing plans are an important part of the Master Plan process. These plans will inform the Master Plan, and in some cases will be incorporated into the plan if the goals and vision are still consistent with the aspirations of the community today.

When will the Plan start? When will it be completed?

The initial phases of the Plan have begun with anticipated completion in the Spring of 2023.
